Things to do in Nungwi: a local shortlist

Nungwi sits on the northern tip of Zanzibar and faces west, so the day here is built around the sea and ends with the sun going down into it. This is the shortlist we give our own guests.

Watch the sunset from the water

From the beach it is beautiful; from a dhow a few hundred metres out it is something else, because you see the whole curve of the coast lit up. Sunset is between about 18:10 and 18:50 all year.

See the dhow builders

Nungwi has built wooden dhows for generations, and you can still see hulls taking shape on the beach. Ask before taking photos; most builders are happy to explain what they are doing.

Visit the turtles

The Mnarani turtle conservation pond in the village looks after sea turtles and releases them back to the ocean. A short, quiet visit that children love.

Snorkel at Mnemba Atoll

The best reef within reach of Nungwi, about an hour away by boat. Leave early, when the sea is calmer and the reef quieter.

Walk to Kendwa at low tide

At low tide you can walk along the sand from Nungwi to Kendwa. Check the tide table first: at high tide the water reaches the rocks.

Questions

How many days do you need in Nungwi?

Three or four days are enough for a sunset cruise, a morning at Mnemba, a sandbank and a few slow beach days.

Is Nungwi good for swimming?

Yes, but the tide moves a lot here. Swim around high tide on the beach, or take a boat to deeper, clearer water.
